Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center
Address:

Description:

Michael "Piper" Cooney is regarded as one of Ireland's foremost exponents on the uilleann pipes and whistle. From a well-known traditional music family in County Tipperary, he grew up in the heart of a revival of traditional music in Ireland. His own vibrant style has been influenced by listening to pipers and fiddlers from many generations. Michael's virtuosity and the timeless universal appeal of the pipes has put him in popular demand. He has toured extensively in Europe and America performing with many well-known musicians. He has enthralled audiences throughout his travels. His first CD, "A Stones Throw" released 2003, has met with much acclaim and he has recently released his second CD, "Just Piping" 2010 with great reviews.

Pat Egan is highly regarded as one of the leading singers/guitar players in traditional Irish music. His guitar backing displays a rare sensitivity and impeccable rhythm which manages to be tasteful yet driving and uplifting. Pat is equally admired for his smooth, lyrical vocals, honest delivery and repertoire of storied songs. Originally from County Tipperary, Pat now resides in Baltimore, Maryland. While growing up in his native County Tipperary, Patrick loved the music so much that he used to take his guitar on the back of a horse and cart to school every week to get lessons from his school teacher, Phil Kelly. He would also trudge across fields and farmland with his guitar just to get a song from local singer John Norton. Luckily, there were lots of singers and guitarists in his home parish and one of the first musicians he ever heard playing traditional Irish music was his neighbor -- uilleann piper Michael Cooney with whom, along with Paddy O'Brien, he would later go on to form the band Chulrua.

Venue:
Dance Rehearsal Room, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Ensemble N_JP will perform "Kyoto_Naigai" under the direction of the Japanese American conductor Rei Hotoda. The outstanding Japanese instrumentalists Naomi Sato (shō), Yoko Kimura (koto) and Naoko Kikuichi (koto) will be joined by Illinois faculty Erik Lund (trombone) and Michael Cameron (contrabass) and N_JP musicians Ted Rankin-Parker (cello), Nick Millevoi (e-guitar), and Gene Coleman (bass clarinet).

This program will also feature a "telematic performance" (live from Tokyo) by the shakuhachi master Akikazu Nakamura, plus traditional Japanese music for shō and koto, thus revealing the origins of N_JP's powerful and evocative sound.

This event is free, open to the public, and will be broadcast live on December 8. All those interested in viewing this event online, please e-mail us at ijpanproject@illinois.edu. Please include "Gene Coleman" in the subject line and your name and contact information in the body.

IJPAN - David G. Goodman: In Memorium

Event Information
Event Date:
November 13, 2011 - 1:00am
Venue:
Spurlock Museum
Address:
600 S. Gregory, Urbana, IL
Description:

We hope you will join us for the next Illinois Japan Performing Arts Network (IJPAN) event, “David G. Goodman: In Memorium.” This commemoration of the life and work of our colleague, friend, and mentor will be held at 7:00 PM on November 12, 2011 in Knight Auditorium of Spurlock Museum (600 S. Gregory, Urbana, IL). As one of many of Professor Goodman’s contributions to re-thinking our engagement with the arts and Japan, IJPAN stands as a lasting tribute to his vision of bridging physical and cultural distances to create new spaces for experimentation in the arts. In that spirit, the event will bring together speakers and performers from the US and Japan both at Knight Auditorium and in cyberspace, via the IJPAN website.

The evening will feature reflections by some of Professor Goodman’s close friends and colleagues, including Nancy Abelmann and Brian Ruppert from EALC; Michael Shapiro (Professor Emeritus, English); and Len Heumann (Professor Emeritus, Urban and Regional Planning and Psychology). Sidney Mintz (Research Professor, Anthropology; Johns Hopkins University) will offer some thoughts on David’s work in a pre-recorded video clip, and we will also share video recordings by Tsuno Kaitarō, as well as piano performances by Takahashi Yuji, both David’s long-time friends and collaborators from Japan. Additional musical performances featuring local string players Benjamin Hayek, Maureen Murchie, Sun-Young Shin, and Lydia Tang will be interspersed with the spoken remembrances.

For further information, please contact Elizabeth Oyler, Director, IJPAN (eaoyler@illinois.edu). To view the live stream of the event via the web, please follow instructions at the IJPAN website: http://www.ijpan.illinois.edu/
