An evening of celebration with a catered Indian dinner, a keynote adddrss, and Indian music and dance. Rabindnath Tagore, poet,educational reformer and philosopher, was the first non-European to win the Nobel prize for literature in 1913. A year before, he gave a series of lectures at Channing Murray, then the Unitarian Church of Urbana.

Join us for the Champaign County kick-off of Welcoming Week 2019! Bring your family and friends for an evening of dynamic international music and entertainment, mouth-watering food, community art-making, giveaways, and an opportunity to welcome our newest neighbors in a safe, fun, and welcoming atmosphere! The event will be held in the parking lot of the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum in Downtown Champaign. This event is free and open to all.

Welcoming Week, an annual series of events held in communities across the United States, brings together immigrants and U.S.-born community members to get to know one another and build community cohesion. LADAMA embodies a virtuosic tapestry of female artists and passionate educators that draws from the traditions of Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and the United States to create “a vivid montage of music of the Americas with irresistible spirit and universal appeal" (All Things Considered, NPR). Guitar, percussion, and the four-stringed bandola llanera drive LADAMA’s chart-topping sound that blends diverse traditional roots music with a twist of pop and R&B to create a Latin Alternative sonic experience!

The Robert E. Brown Center for World Music offers community members the opportunity to learn and play traditional Balinese Gamelan music under the direction of I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a master gamelan musician and composer at the University of Illinois. A gamelan is an orchestra consisting mainly of keyed metallophones, gongs, and drums, often functioning as accompaniment to dance, dramas, and other Balinese performance arts.
