CAS invites you to a musical performance by the Malian and Grammy-Award nominee, Cheikh Hamala Diabate.

Diabate is a West African historian in the Griot tradition. A sought-after performer, lecturer, storyteller and choreographer throughout Africa, Europe, Asia and North America, Cheick Hamala has performed at venues such as the Smithsonian Institution and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Artist Bios:

Born in Taiwan, Yu-Chen Wang is a guzheng performer as well as a composer. She graduated from Tainan National University of the Arts. While living in United State, she joined two ensembles, Compost Q Music/Dance Improvisation Group (USA) and Orchid ensemble (Canada); these two groups bring her performs across the U.S. Ms. Wang is the winner of the Gold Prize at the “Golden Lotus” International Youth Music Competition in Macau. She was a three-time First Prize winner at the Taiwan National Music Competition, First Prize at the Chinese Musical Instrument Association’s Competition, and the winner of the Taiwan Young Concert Artist Competition. Ms. Wang has appeared as soloist with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, the Tainan National University Chinese Orchestra, the National Chinese Orchestra, and the Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra. She has performed many solo recitals and has toured to Germany with the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Wang was invited to play as a guest artist for Kansas City’s newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, UMKC Music Nova, UIUC New Music Ensemble, and Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. She has worked with several prominent composers, including Chen Yi, Zhou Long, Erik Lund, Yao Chen, Stephen Yip, and Yuanchen Li, in preparation for performances and premieres of their compositions. She was appointed to Suzhou Chinese Orchestra as a guzheng performer in 2017.

A versatile bassist, Han-Jui (Henry) Chen has performed in North America, Europe, South Africa, Asia, and his native Taiwan. He enjoys performing as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral bassist. Henry was appointed to the faculty at Central Conservatory of Music in Fall of 2018. He previously taught double bass at Soochow University during 2014-2018, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2013, and Ball State University during 2011-2012. Henry also taught regularly in many international festivals such as Lan-Yang International Double Bass Summer Camp, Biarritz International Bass Academy, Chicago Bass Festival at Ravinia, and Illinois Summer Youth Music. In addition to his rich teaching experiences, Henry has also established a successful orchestral career. He was appointed principal bass of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in 2008. He served as principal of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and Advent Chamber Orchestra in Chicago, associated principal bass of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and assistant principal bass of the Sinfonia da Camera in Champaign-Urbana. Henry earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Master’s degree from DePaul University. Henry has worked with several prominent composers, including Chen Yi, Zhou Long, Erik Lund, Bright Sheng, Stephen Yip, and Yao Chen, in preparation for performances and premieres of their compositions.

The “Taal: Rhythms for Life” concert celebrates the 125th Anniversary of Vivekananda’s Speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. The concert features nationally acclaimed vocalist and specialist in Indian classical fusion music, Nirmalya Roy, and award-winning American guitarist Fareed Haque.

In this rare presentation of jugalbandhi: synergic and spontaneous performance, master musicians Nirmalya Roy and Fareed Haque will create a jazz-style call-and-response that harnesses both of their dynamic musical traditions.

Like the Monarch Butterfly, Son Monarcas takes you on a musical migration from the USA to Latin America by fusing indie soul with traditional son & cumbia. Son Monarcas is comprised of musicians who are well-versed in the Afro-Mestizo genres of folk music from Latin America and who blend the traditional with the contemporary by creating original arrangements of "son" while retaining the foundation of the traditional style. Their original compositions include influences of Cumbia, Samba, Jazz, and Experimental music in English and Spanish.

Son Monarcas are co-sponsored by Unit One/Allen Hall, SLAYS - the Latinx Student Group of Allen Hall, and the CU Folk and Roots Festival.

In the project "Yogiposa", a play on the words yoga and mariposa (butterfly), Son Monarcas' multi-instrumentalists Irekani Ferreyra and Mercedes Inez create a magical soundscape of ambient beats, healing frequencies and rich harmonies. Combining compositions for voice, guitar, violin, requinto jarocho, kalimba, looping, and drums, Son Monarcas' music ranges from ambient tribal meditation to downtempo world-infused grooves.
