2021 Art Remastered

Event Information
Event Date:
October 2, 2021 - 12:30pm
Venue:
Allerton Park, Sunken Garden
Address:
515 Old Timber Road Monticello, IL
Description:

This fall, Krannert Art Museum, Allerton Park & Retreat Center, and the School of Music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have partnered to premiere What Stays Behind, a new site-specific composition by Andrew Rodriguez at the 2021 Art Remastered.

Rodriguez’s original score for strings and percussion interrogates how we experience the spaces of Allerton Park and KAM in regard to sound and movement. The piece will be performed by twelve students from the School of Music, who will be physically spaced out in unique configurations throughout Allerton’s Sunken Garden and KAM’s East Gallery. At each performance, audience members are invited to move throughout the space and in-between performers to participate in an immersive experience.

Two performances will take place in the Sunken Garden at Allerton Park on Saturday, October 2 at 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm.

Another unique performance of What Stays Behind will occur in the East Gallery of Krannert Art Museum on Thursday, October 7 at 6:30 pm. Face coverings and registration for this event are required.

Urbana Cinema & Sound presents "The Dragon Painter"

Event Information
Event Date:
August 11, 2021 - 8:30pm
Venue:
Boneyard Creek Crossing
Address:
corner of Race and Griggs Streets, Downtown Urbana.
Description:

Join the Urbana Arts and Culture Program and The Urbana Free Library for Cinema & Sound, a new outdoor event series that combines film screenings with live music! Join us for films, music, and entertainment as we feature the classic silent film, "The Dragon Painter" set to live music by Kuroshio, a local ensemble featuring Jason Finkelman (percussion, laptop electronics) and Joy Yang (theremin, keyboard) with special guests Saori Kataoka (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Kavi Naidu (saxophone, flutes).

"The Dragon Painter" is a 1919 English language silent romance drama film. It stars Sessue Hayakawa as a young Japanese painter who believes that his fiancée (played by Hayakawa's wife Tsuru Aoki), is a princess who has been captured and turned into a dragon. The film survives today as a tribute to Hayakawa's great artistry and a shining example of Asian-American cinema.

Kuroshio is an ever-evolving ensemble of improvising artists of Asian descent. They explore and contemplate notions of identity, culture and diasporic histories through multilayered channels of sound and performance. Drawing from rich currents of avant-garde creative practice, Kuroshio’s self-titled debut on Asian Improv Records (2020) features Finkelman and Yang with Shu-Cheng Allen Wu (LinnStrument).

This month's film will be shown at Boneyard Creek Crossing, at the corner of Race and Griggs Streets in Downtown Urbana. The film begins at 8:30pm.

Sponsored by The Urbana Free Library and the Urbana Arts and Culture Program.

Admission:
Free and open to the public.
