Krannert Center for the Performing Arts - Studio Theatre

Lulo Reinhardt and Daniel Stelter

Music is at the root of Lulo Reinhardt’s Romani family tree—his great-uncle is jazz legend Django; his uncle, the Gypsy violin master Shnuckenack; and his father, Bawo, a guitarist who handed Lulo his first set of six strings at age five. Lulo’s own growth as an artist was inspired by multiple musical influences—not only the Gypsy jazz sounds of his formative years in Germany but the sonic landscapes of Brazil, Spain, and Africa that helped him hone a rhythmically diverse, Latin swing approach to Gypsy music that has won over global audiences. Guitarist Daniel Stelter has also forged a unique and versatile voice in the German jazz scene, surfing with skill among blues, rock, and pop styles.

Antonio Toledo

The anciently rooted, petite, five-stringed timple (pronounced TIM-play) becomes a channel for sonic exhilaration in the hands of Gran Canaria-born Germán López. The youthful master timplista entered the Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas at age seven, quickly becoming virtuosic in Spain’s rich rhythmic traditions of flamenco, malaguena, tajarastes, bulerías, tanguillos, and rumbas. He is joined by acoustic guitar virtuoso Antonio Toledo, who is originally from the Azores Islands, for an afternoon of dexterous music making that celebrates the sparkling precision of heritage acoustic performance.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Pakistan-born, California-raised, Manhattan School of Music-educated, jazz artist Rez Abbasi was voted the number one Rising Star Guitarist in the 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll. It’s a ranking born from collaborations with a growing list of jazz greats and 12 studio albums of mostly original compositions filled with Abbasi’s unique world music fusion of American jazz and Indian classical Carnatic music. That melding of cultural traditions will cascade in textural sounds and excitingly complex compositions in Abbasi’s new score for German director Franz Osten’s 1929 silent film "A Throw of Dice", which depicts the love-triangle saga of India’s epic The Mahabharata.

Mohsen Namjoo is an Iranian artist, songwriter, singer, music scholar and setar (traditional Persian lute) player based in California. Born in 1976 in Torbat-e Jam, Iran, Namjoo began his musical training at the age of twelve. In 1994 Namjoo began to study Theater and Music at the University of Tehran. Namjoo also studied Iranian folk music. His unique music style resembles a patchwork of Persian classical poetry of Hafez, Rumi or Saadi with western music, namely rock, blues, and jazz.

Hailed as “the Bob Dylan of Iran” by the New York Times, Mohsen Namjoo is a visionary artist who speaks for and touches the souls of today’s youth. Seamlessly blending the classical with the modern, the ancient with the current, Mohsen Namjoo is a true musical maverick.

Goran Ivanovic Trio

Event Information
Event Date:
August 18, 2017 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Iron Post
Address:
120 S. Race Street, Urbana
Description:

One of the most versatile, skilled, and curious musicians in Chicago, guitarist Goran Ivanovic has built a career built upon exploration. Born and raised in Croatia, he was in the midst of studying at the prestigious Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria with masters like Elliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch when his parents (his father is a Serb, his mother a Bosnian Croat) were expelled in the late 90s; the family was granted asylum in the US and they settled in Chicago. Since his arrival he’s displayed a deep interest in collaboration, steadily expanding his stylistic range well beyond the European classical music and Balkan sounds he was fluently versed in when he arrived. These days his repertoire not only incorporates those disciplines, but jazz and flamenco as well. He’s recorded duet albums with the great Pakistani-Chilean jazz guitarist Fareed Haque as well as Greek-American musician Andreas Kapsalis. He’s a key member of the quartet Eastern Blok with Matt Ulery, Doug Rosenberg, and Michael Caskey, a combo that deftly surveys the folk music of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Serbia in a distinctly jazz-oriented context, embroidering timeless Balkan melodies and rhythms with sophisticated improvisational gambits. Most recently, Ivanovic released an eponymous trio album with bassist Ulery and percussionist Pete Tashjian where he’s achieved a stunning assimilation of his many influences, creating a hybrid all his own. Reviewing the new album for All About Jazz, Budd Kopman wrote, “It is easy to get lost in Ivanovic's technique, especially if one plays (or attempts to play) Classical style guitar, in a jazz style or not.” The trio’s agility has also been noted. As Jeff Elbel wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times, “The trio are recognized for their individual virtuosity, but they show particular excellence as a unit able to stop on a dime and twist gracefully through the trickiest hairpin turns together on local stages.”
