Afro-Brazilian Percussion Workshops with Bloco Gavião
The Robert E. Brown Center for World Music is pleased to offer Spring 2022 dates for our community samba group - Bloco Gavião - developed in collaboration with Capoeira Angola Center of Mestre João Grande – Illinois and supported by Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
Open to campus and community members, these workshops introduce Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions including samba-reggae and maracatu. The workshops are led by Mark Becker, a Capoeira Angola student of Contra-Mestre Denis Chiaramonte and a musician experienced with samba “blocos” in both Brazil and the United States.
Workshops are admission free. Instruments will be provided. Bringing a related ensemble instrument is welcome.
Schedule:
2:00 - 2:50 pm - Introduction to basics (open to the public)
3:00 - 3:50 pm - Bloco Gavião practice session
Orchestra Rehearsal Room at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, located at 500 S. Goodwin Street in Urbana.
Please note we are following COVID-19 protocols of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts requiring participants to provide proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the workshop, and that masks to be worn throughout the session.
