Japan House will celebrate summer with a day of Asian-inspired performers, food and artists inside and around Japan House and the Arboretum at the University of Illinois.

The fifth annual Matsuri Festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 8 from 12pm to 9pm. Matsuri will include a variety of free performances, including Ho Etsu Taiko drum group, martial arts demonstrations, “The Candyman” street performer who makes candy sculptures and “wows” audiences with his style of magic, traditional dance, and Japanese tsugaru-jamisen player Michiyoshi Sato. Returning for their 2nd year, the crowd favorite international Japanese all-female band the 5. 6. 7. 8’s will end the night rocking out until the fireworks start at 8:30.

The Robert E. Brown Center for World Music offers community members the opportunity to learn and play traditional Balinese Gamelan music under the direction of I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a master gamelan musician and composer at the University of Illinois. A gamelan is an orchestra consisting mainly of keyed metallophones, gongs, and drums, often functioning as accompaniment to dance, dramas, and other Balinese performance arts.
