Champaign-Urbana's longest-running weekly Irish traditional music session led by Jake Schumacher.
The session focuses on the traditional dance music of Ireland--jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes and much more--played on authentic Irish instruments including fiddle, button accordion, concertina, pipes and tenor banjo. Throughout the evening occasional songs are sung, stories are told, and often dancing starts during the second hour (sets, polkas and waltzes).
Musicians with some experience in playing Irishmusic are welcome, and those with an interest in learning to play Irish music are encouraged to come and listen, as well as all who enjoy Irish and Irish-American culture, food and drink. For more information, contact Jake Schumacher at boscapod@gmail.com.

Prairie Breezes Concert Series Presents Jason Finkelman
Percussionist Jason Finkelman presents a concert of African and Brazilian instruments, found objects, and interactive improvisation.
Foghorn Stringband is the shining gold standard for American stringband music, with seven albums, thousands of shows, over a decade of touring under their belts, and two entirely new generations of old-time musicians following their lead. Through all this, they’ve never let the music grow cold; instead they’ve been steadily proving that American roots music is a never-ending well of inspiration. From their origins in Portland, Oregon’s underground roots music scene, the core duo of Foghorn Stringband, Caleb Klauder, whose wistful, keening vocals and rapid-fire mandolin picking have always been the heart of the band, and Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind, perhaps the best old-time fiddler of his generation, have spread the old-time stringband gospel all over the world, but they’ve also brought in new influences and inspirations from their many travels and fellow bandmates. Vintage country and honky-tonk became a staple of Foghorn Stringband thanks to Klauder’s intense passion for the music, and frequent visits to Louisiana have inspired the group to bring Cajun songs into the repertoire.
They will be joined by The Yellow Jacket Stringband, made up of Tom Turino and Kate Fritz, with guest. They will be performing old-time, blues, Scottish, Cajun, and whatever suits their fancey. Come early to get a good seat.

Community Gamelan Classes
The Robert E. Brown Center for World Music offers community members the opportunity to learn and play traditional Balinese Gamelan music under the direction of I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a master gamelan musician and composer at the University of Illinois. A gamelan is an orchestra consisting mainly of keyed metallophones, gongs, and drums, often functioning as accompaniment to dance, dramas, and other Balinese performance arts.
As part of the center’s outreach programming, these Monday evening classes from 6pm to 8pm are open to all, free of charge, with no prior experience required. Classes are newly located in Room 1188 of School of Music at 1114 W. Nevada Street, with the closest entrance located on the Oregon Street side of the building. No credit is offered and registration is not needed for these classes. However, participants join the ensemble with an understanding that members need to attend regularly in order to enjoy the responsibility of making music in an orchestra where everyone depends on the contribution of every player.
