About the Center

Welcome! The Center for World Music is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to foster awareness and understanding of the world's performing arts traditions
through programs of performance, teaching, and cultural travel.
The U. of I.’s world music center, located on the fourth floor of the Levis Faculty
Center, was founded after the School of Music received a significant gift from the
estate of Robert E. Brown, the ethnomusicologist credited with coining the phrase
“world music.” The gift to the U. of I., announced in 2006, included Brown’s extensive
