Performance, Chanting in Sanskrit & Dharma talk: Buddhism and Happiness

-Opening/greeting Tibetan village dance performed to welcome H.H. the Dalai Lama when he visits monastery or Tibetan settlement; "Tashi Sholpa."
-Sanskrit Mantras chanted by Venerable Lobsang Jamyang, trained at Banaras Hindu Univ. in Varansai, India.
-Mantra of Independent Origination as taught by Shakyamuni Buddha, Praises for Buddha and Bohdisattvas.
-Beautiful Sanskrit recitation of the Heart Sutra; with handouts.

-PowerPoint presentation: Buddhism and Happiness. Learn how these devout monks practice Buddhism in their Monastery in order to reach enlightenment (state of happiness).

The Tashi Kyil monks are grateful for donations to further their work and help fund their monastery in India (tmbcc.org). Donation jars will be available at all events. Recommended donation is $10, but not required. Also, merchandise made by monks and Tibetan refugees living in India will be offered for sale!

Brown Center for World Music offers community members the opportunity to learn and play traditional Balinese Gamelan music under the direction of I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a master gamelan musician and composer at the University of Illinois. A gamelan is an orchestra consisting mainly of keyed metallophones, gongs, and drums, often functioning as accompaniment to dance, dramas, and other Balinese performance arts.

Our Monday evening classes run from 6pm to 8pm in Room 1188 of School of Music at 1114 W. Nevada Street. Community gamelan is open to all, free of charge, with no prior experience required. No credit is offered. There is no need for registration, but participants who join the ensemble should understand that regular attendance is expected in order to enjoy making music in an orchestra dependent upon the contribution of every player. Community Gamelan members will be invited to perform at our end of semester concert.
