Songs for the Mid-Autumn Festival - Altgeld Chimes

Event Information
Event Date:
October 1, 2020 - 6:00pm
Venue:
Altgeld Chimes
Address:
1409 W Green St, Urbana, IL
Description:

Altgeld Chimes will be celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with a small set of East Asian songs this Thursday, Oct. 1. This is the third concert in our BIPOC series, "Amplify Their Voices."

The collection of songs will be played twice, once in the morning (divided across two passing periods - 11:50am and 12:50pm), and once in the evening (one concert at 6pm - livestream). Feel free to come listen, but as always, we encourage social distancing!

While they are only featuring East Asian songs for this concert, they recognize that certain groups from Southeast Asian cultures also celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Altgeld Chimes welcomes suggestions for songs to build their Southeast Asian repertoire and for future BIPOC concerts.

Acknowledge. Disrupt. Listen. Amplify.

The following statement from the Illinois Musicology Faculty was issued on June 4, 2020.

To our UIUC musicological community,

We write to you to express our anger, our grief, and our resolve, in harmony with messages from the campus, College of FAA, and School of Music. Recent events urge us to reflect deeply on white supremacy in our society, in our police force, and indeed in our work as musicologists.

We acknowledge our disciplinary complicity in reifying structures of power that all too often suppress the voices and sounds of the most vulnerable among us. We are resolved to foster and sustain efforts that seek to disrupt the pernicious narratives of supremacy that have shaped our academic and pedagogical practices.

We believe that one of the crucial ways to tackle these challenges is to provide spaces for those voices that have been silenced for too long, because listening is an inextricable part of the work that we do as scholars and practitioners of sonic arts. As we work to tackle these inequalities, we commit to amplifying the work of minority scholars and practitioners of music so that we may continually grow as a community that is strengthened by the creative tension that arises from diversity.
