In-person Capoeira Angola Classes return to Urbana, IL at the UC Independent Media Center.

Classes are for all skill levels and will be led by Contramestre Denis Chiaramonte, student of Mestre João Grande. Contramestre Denis has been teaching Capoeira and other Afro-Brazilian cultural expressions for the past 30 years.

Classes will include movement as well as music basics of the Capoeira Angola tradition. Please come wearing pants, shoes and a t-shirt you can comfortably move in. White clothes are preferred, but optional for beginners.

We will ask you to check in when you arrive and please wear a mask during our training sessions.

We are offering these in-person classes at a discounted fee. You can make your payment in person with cash or over Venmo.

Saxophonist Aakash Mittal and percussionist Lesley Mok create music at the intersection of improvisation, composition, sonified movement, and noise.

Both artists draw inspiration from a number of cultural traditions including Hindustani raga music, Cuban rumba and Jazz. The colorful dissonances, meditative silences, and angular rhythms that emerge invite the listener to enter a sonic landscape of thoughtful spontaneity.

Mittal and Mok are based in Brooklyn, NY and are active members of the NYC creative music community.

Sandeep Das (tabla) & Mike Block (cello/vocals) are a dynamic, cross-genre duo that originally met as members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble. Featuring a combination of the tabla (a pair of Indian drums used in Hindustani Classical music), cello (a bowed string instrument used in European classical music), as well as vocals (both rhythmic and melodic), this energetic duo has been performing since 2013, sharing their music throughout America and India via tours and residencies, and even on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Their debut album includes compositions from Western Classical and North Indian Hindustani traditions, adaptations of music from around the world, and several of their own original compositions.

Mike Block is a pioneering cello player, singer, composer, and educator, hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as the "ideal musician of the 21st-Century." Known for transforming his instrument into a speaking entity of magnetic pull, his focus on creative instrumental music has led to collaborations with many of the leading lights of his generation, most notably Vijay Iyer, in whose trio and sextet Crump plays a dynamic, founding role. He can also be heard as long-standing member of Jen Chapin Trio, Ches Smith Trio, Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quartet, Liberty Ellman Sextet, Secret Keeper (duo with Mary Halvorson), his own Rosetta Trio (with Jamie Fox, Liberty Ellman), his Rhombal quartet (with Ellery Eskelin, Adam OFarrill, Tyshawn Sorey), as well as co-led ensembles with Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, Cory Smythe, Eric McPherson, Mat Maneri, and Okkyung Lee.

Stephan's solo performance, which explores his unique musical language through an expansive range of sonorities on the acoustic bass, is a culmination of decades of work as a bassist, composer, and improviser. Throughout the last year, he released monthly solo recordings in a fan-supported series via his Bandcamp page. This body of work is featured in the upcoming solo album, Rocket Love.
