Afro-Brazilian Percussion Workshops with Bloco Gavião

The Robert E. Brown Center for World Music is pleased to announce Fall 2021 dates and a new location for our community samba group - Bloco Gavião - being developed in collaboration with Capoeira Angola Center of Mestre João Grande – Illinois.

Free community workshops will be offered on the following Saturdays from 2:00p - 3:30p in Orchestra Rehearsal Room at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, located at 500 S. Goodwin Street in Urbana.

Sep 25, Oct 2, Oct 16, Oct 30 and Nov 13.

Open to campus and community members free of charge, workshops introduce Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions, including samba-reggae and maracatu. The workshops are led by Mark Becker, a Capoeira Angola student of Contra-Mestre Denis Chiaramonte, and a musician experienced with samba 'blocos' in both Brazil & the United States. Instruments will be provided.

We would like to thank Spurlock Museum of World Cultures for their support of our most recent workshops. We are excited to newly partner with Krannert Center to offer the workshops in a larger space.

Please note we are following COVID-19 protocols of the University of Illinois requiring that masks to be worn throughout the session.
