The Center for Advanced Study provides this opportunity to explore pioneering scholarship produced at the University of Illinois, through its "Noonhour Presentations" series. Bring your lunch for for an exciting talk by UIUC Musicology Division Associate Professor, Dr. Donna Buchanan.

Dr. Buchanan's paper is entitled "Audible Cosmology: Belfries, Minarets, and the Sounding of Ethnoreligious Sentiment in Post-2000 Bulgaria." In this presentation, she explores how the interface of the everyday and the cosmological in postsocialist Bulgaria is being sounded, heard, and enacted through cultural performance. Specifically, she will juxtapose three incidents, each encountered during a year's fieldwork in 2010-11, when the sound worlds of Christianity and Islam collided, revealing a politics of religious nationalism whose contested audibility, through bellringing and the call to prayer, staked a certain moral claim on the public space of Bulgaria's future.
