Support the Center

October 19, 2020

The School of Music at the University of Illinois is pleased to announce a new gift fund in honor of the memory of Nick Rudd that advances programming of the Robert E. Brown Center for World Music. A beloved figure of Champaign-Urbana’s music community, guitarist Nick Rudd’s joy of improvised music, the jazz avant-garde, progressive rock, and music traditions of the world will be celebrated in annual concerts billed “Nick Rudd Music Experience.”

Generously initiated by Rudd’s surviving wife Gina Manola and stepson Townes Durbin, the fund was established with the goal of reaching endowment levels to ensure this series becomes an ongoing and permanent part of the music culture of our campus and community. Manola adds, “Nick was an enthusiastic fan of Sudden Sound concerts and of the international music presented by the Center for World Music, so supporting these areas of programming in his memory is very meaningful.”

Anyone who would like to contribute to the Nick Rudd Music Fund, please contact David Allen, advancement director for the School of Music at allend@illinois.edu or contribute directly online at giving.illinois.edu by typing “Rudd” in the search field.

Programs of the Robert E. Brown Center for World Music are dependent upon grants, gifts, and funds raised through concerts, performances and services. The Center was established at the University of Illinois on the basis of two acts of generosity: the donation of Indonesian gamelan orchestras and other instruments from the Estate of Robert E. Brown, and seed money from the University’s Office of the Provost and the School of Music. These funds enabled us to transport the instruments from the California estate, outfit a teaching space, hire a director and visiting artists, and get the program started.

If we are to continue to share music of the world’s cultures—engaging visiting artists from myriad traditions, acquiring the instruments they need to teach their music, presenting concerts, lectures, and workshops, and sending our artists out into the schools as they strive to enrich their curricula, we will need the support of alumni and friends who see the importance of our efforts to bring awareness of the richness of the world’s performing arts to the University and our community.
